DECADE OF SUCCESS CELEBRATION
A FARM near Rugeley is celebrating a decade of supplying rapseed oil to the kitchens of fellow families across the country.
In 2007 Anthony Froggatt saw an opportunity to produce rapeseed oil from the crops on his family farm after it became recognised by nutritionists as a healthy alternative to olive oil.
And a decade on Just Oil has expanded to offer dressings, mayonnaise and even crisps, making use of both rapeseed oil and potatoes grown at Wade Lane Farm in Hill Ridware. The latest addition to the family is a range of dried fava beans and pea
s for snackers who want a spicy kick.
Just Oil products are now stocked on the shelves of 65 Tesco branches across the region and the Just Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil has won numerous awards, including the 2 Star Gold Award at the Guild of Fine Food Great Taste 2012.
But rather than outsourcing steps of the production process, it is still conducted entirely on-farm, from growing the crop to havesting, cold-pressing, filtering and bottling.
The crisps are also manufactured on site, using potatoes grown just metres away from the building where they are sorted, cut, cooked and packaged.
Not only does the approach cut down on food miles, but general waste is kept to a minimum through the recycling of used rapeseed oil and waste crisps. Rapeseed meal, left over after the Oil has been extracted, becomes feed for local cattle and solar panels are used on the farm’s buildings to generate renewable energy.
Mr Froggatt, 52, said: “We started off bottling and labelling by hand, and slowly but surely we bought more sophisticated equipment. We used to work in a portable building and now we do about 200 bottles an hour.
“The mayonnaise is the only thing we don’t do here – we have a third party for that because of the eggs.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since we first started producing rapeseed oil from our crops. We started out with the aim of providing a safe and affordable product for people in the local area, and through our partnership with Tesco, that dream has been realised and exceeded.”
